Arrival & First Meeting

Today is a school holiday (Orthodox Pentecost). Thus, there was time for an extensive getting-to-know-you conversation with the principal. We discussed planned activities. He reported that he is developing a new learning method similar to Deeper Learning, which he will describe to me in detail later. It was also particularly interesting that Platon School Katerini participated in the Sharing Worldviews project, in which KPH Wien/Niederösterreich was also involved. Tomorrow, I plan to observe religious education classes.

As it was explained, the architecture of the school building simulates a bow (kindergarden), an arrow (primary school) and a target (secondary schools).

School Life & Erasmus Collaboration

Start of the school day: The principal welcomes all students arriving by bus (he tracks them via a map tool). A prayer was held in front of the school building as older students had final exams (a student recited the Our Father). We discussed collaboration with KPH Wien/Niederösterreich within Erasmus+ (environment & spirituality). A school tour provided background on the Greek school system.

Lesson Planning & Math Class

Very detailed preparation for further collaboration with the principal, including drafting a joint Lesson Plan Template. For lesson observation, I attended a 5th-grade Mathematics class. Although it is not my subject (I requested Religion or Digital Education), it was interesting to see the teaching style. The students were actively involved, and the topic was developed collaboratively.

Religion, Music & Guest School

Meeting and exchange with the Religion teacher. Scheduled an appointment with the Metropolitan of the region for tomorrow. Observed a 5th-grade Music class (mostly theory, rhythm, and notes on the board). Learning outcomes varied greatly among students. Afterwards, I visited an activity by an Erasmus+ guest school from Romania focusing on the Muses. More talks with the Religion teacher planned for tomorrow.

Metropolitan Meeting & Digital Religious Education

Today was an incredibly rich final day. I observed a Modern Greek lesson and had an inspiring meeting with Metropolitan Georgios, who showed great openness toward future interconfessional and interreligious collaborations. I also discussed future joint projects with the Metropolis of Pieria coordinator.

During an exchange with the Religion teacher, she explained that Greek teachers select their own textbooks. She shared her lesson preparations, including global topics like Orthodox missions in Africa (Congo, Tanzania). She highlighted creative student projects: 15-year-olds (3rd Gymnasium) independently developed a smartphone-integrated board game with a digital spinning wheel, and 13-year-olds (1st Gymnasium) built a Lego game illustrating the healing of the paralytic in Capernaum. They also created posters, a student newspaper cover story about people with special needs, and an Easter presentation for German Erasmus+ visitors. I introduced the method of Bibliodrama, though it seems less common here.

After being informed that class periods last 30–35 minutes, I had a final, productive wrap-up conversation with the principal to exchange experiences and discuss future school partnerships. The day concluded with an extracurricular session on future Mars missions, taught in English and Greek using an Erasmus+ PowerPoint presentation.
